or recoup, a sum of money. In 1983 Ian Hamilton, a British literary
journalist best known for a biography of the poet Robert Lowell,
contracted with Random House to write a biography of that most
elusive and reclusive of novelists, J.D. Salinger. This he did, over
his subject's resistance, and two years ago the finished product was
prepared for publication. But Salinger objected to Hamilton's
