The number of accidents involving school buses has risen steadily
in Maryland in the last four years, according to a state Department
of Education survey released at a time of increased public concern
over school bus safety.
Across Maryland, 1,181 bus accidents occurred in the 1986-87
school year, after three successive years of increases. Last year's
accidents resulted in 111 injuries and two deaths.
Public attention has focused on school bus safety in the wake of
a Kentucky accident May 14 that left 27 dead and 40 injured. The
next day, three died in a Clinton, N.Y., school bus accident. ...
