On May 15, The Seattle Times ran nine letters to the editor. One
stood out. It was from Aziz Kayumov, a citizen of Tashkent, the
Central Asian city of 4.5 million people that is the capital of the
Uzbek Soviet Socialist Republic.
In any other U.S. newspaper, a letter to the editor from the
other side of the Earth and the far side of the East-West debate
would be unusual. In Seattle, it's part of the normal dialogue that
began in the early 1970s when the people of the two towns chose to
become sister cities.
