Official Defends Japan's WWII Role; Remarks by Cabinet Member Spark Furor in China, S. Korea

A top minister in Prime Minister Noboru Takeshita's Cabinet has set off an international furor with recent statements that Japan was not the aggressor in World War II but was simply acting "to protect itself" against "the white race that had turned Asia into a colony."

China's official New China News Agency and South Korean newspapers reacted immediately, warning that the comments by Seisuke Okuno, 75, who heads the National Land Agency in the Takeshita Cabinet, could damage bilateral relations.
