S. African Author Alan Paton Dies

Alan Paton, South Africa's best-known author and a tireless
opponent of apartheid for more than four decades, died early today of
cancer at his home outside Durban. He was 85.
Paton's most widely read novel was "Cry, The Beloved Country," a
compelling word picture of statutory racial separation drawn through
the story of a simple Zulu parson's anguished search for his missing
delinquent son in Johannesburg's teeming shanty towns.
It was published in 1948, the year that the National Party came
to power, and later was dramatized and filmed, awakening the world to
the conditions of the black ...
