Peter the Great, the Russian czar, was deeply fond of Amsterdam.
He loved its calm canals, its cosmopolitan comforts, its unaffected
art. He visited the city first in 1696, traveling incognito. He
went there for the ships.
As a child he'd discovered a little English sailing boat rotting
in a shed on his family's estate, and had patiently rebuilt it. As a
