Tax Changes Aid Working Parents

Most Marylanders who earn less than $15,000 will pay less in state and local income taxes as a result of last year's changes in state and federal tax laws, according to a study prepared for the General Assembly.

The major beneficiaries of the tax law revisions are working parents, single and married, said a report prepared by the Department of Fiscal Services.

This is due primarily to a decision by the General Assembly last year to allow working parents to claim the federal earned income credit as a credit on their state tax returns, the study said.
