Botha Assailed for Halting Trial;S. African Opposition Charges Double Standard in Clemency Offers

South African opposition politicians today angrily demanded that President Pieter W. Botha reverse his decision to halt the trial of six soldiers charged with murdering a black activist in the South African-administered territory of Namibia.

Opposition members of Parliament charged Botha with duplicity for intervening in the murder trial just a week after he had refused to intervene in the scheduled execution of six blacks, saying he could not interfere with the judicial process.

The six blacks later won a stay of execution from a Supreme Court judge on the basis of new evidence.
