Winter morning in Ooty, a hill town in the Nilgiri Hills of southern India. It's quiet. Fog nestles softly in the lower part of town and a few people bundle along, their breath smoking in the gray cold.

India is lovely in the early morning. There's a thrilling sense of anticipation of what the new day and a new place will bring. Today, for instance, I am to leave Ooty (officially Ootacamund) and take a bus down the mountain to Bamboo Banks, a forest guest house from which I hope to view some wildlife.
