Seventeen years ago, fiddler Vassar Clements released an album
called "Hillbilly Jazz," a refreshing and sometimes even exhilarating
blend of country and swing music. Clements played a similar blend
last night at Blues Alley, but the results were far less impressive.
Not that he's lost his touch. His playing frequently combined an
astringent tone with a breezy lilt, imparting a finger-popping pulse
to familiar tunes like "Undecided." His phrasing was every bit as
