Risk of Hip Fractures Related to Tranquilizers

Elderly people can dramatically reduce their risk of fracturing a
hip in a fall by not taking certain kinds of tranquilizers, a
Vanderbilt study reports.
Users of longer-acting tranquilizers-those lasting more than 24
hours-had a 70 percent greater risk of hip fracture than those not
using any tranquilizers, the study found. Those using shorter-acting
tranquilizers had no significantly increased risk, compared with
those not using any such medications. The study was based on a
review of medical records of elderly residents of the Canadian
province of Saskatchewan between 1977 and 1985. ...
