Soviets Appoint Russian Politburo; Creation Seen as Recognition of Growing Nationalist Sentiment

In the face of growing Russian nationalist sentiment, Soviet Communist Party leaders today named a 15-man Russian Politburo to look after the affairs of the Soviet Union's largest and most important republic.

Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev, who will chair the Russian Politburo, told a meeting of the policy-making Central Committee that Russia was the "backbone of the Soviet Union," accounting for 60 percent of the country's national income. He said there was an "urgent need" for radical changes in attitudes toward Russia's problems.
