SAN BERNARDINO - A nurse's first year on the job can be difficult. Many drop out.

California ranks dead last in nurses per capita, which is inspiring some hospitals to come up with innovative programs to attract and keep newly educated nurses.

Attracting fledgling nurses is one problem. But keeping them is another story.

St. Bernardine Medical Center is tackling the problem with a mentoring program that pairs the newly minted with veterans.
