Alvin Ailey Jr., the choreographer and director of a great American dance company who translated black American song and story into ballet that thrilled audiences around the world, died yesterday at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City.

The founder and director of the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater died of a blood dyscrasia, a rare disorder of the bone marrow, his physician, Dr. Albert B. Knapp, said in an interview last night.
