Auckland matters

Auckland might be the city Mainlanders love to deride, but the knots it has tied itself in over its local government demand national attention, writes PETER LUKE.

The Government has announced that it will set up a Royal Commission to resolve Auckland's local- government woes.

The bitter fight over the waterfront stadium revealed the divisions within the nation's biggest urban area, but South Islanders might believe solving this is of no concern to them. Why should Mainlanders give a toss about the health of Auckland's local government and infrastructure?
