The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts should be the
pride of the nation's capital, a beacon of culture for Americans for
every level of society. Instead, it's a showplace for the rich.
The center practices pocketbook discrimination. Ticket prices
are so high that working Americans can't afford to go there.
The price of a good seat for two recent offerings at the Kennedy
Center was $42 and $40. Elsewhere in the District, a second-row seat
at the Arena Stage cost less than $21, and an orchestra seat at the
Folger cost $27-and that's for Shakespeare.
