Tens of thousands of people queued for rice in the East Timor capital of Dili yesterday, amid growing food shortages and warnings of a humanitarian crisis.

Australian troops said they were close to controlling security, but looting and burning continued and youths threw stones at the airport and played cat and mouse with international security forces.
