Corcoran Buys Copley Canvas; Purchase Price for Colonial Portrait Not Disclosed

The Corcoran Gallery of Art has bought what art historians view as the picture it most needs.

It has purchased, on the market, a superb Boston portrait by John Singleton Copley (1738-1815), Colonial America's most important painter.

The canvas, now on view in the gallery's rotunda, is a stern and forceful portrait of a prosperous Boston Tory, Thomas Amory II (1722-1784). The picture was selected by Franklin Kelly, the Corcoran's curator of collections. Its acquisition closes what he has described as "perhaps the crucial gap in our collection."
