Tanaka Leaving Japan's Legislature

Former prime minister Kakuei Tanaka, a towering figure who
brought big money into power politics and wielded huge influence for
years after his conviction in the Lockheed bribery case, today
announced his retirement from parliament.
Tanaka, 71, a self-made man and an outsider, bulled his way to
power in 1972 through force of personality and close ties to
construction barons and other financial powerhouses. He helped
