A priest on a mission to convert the Pagan Irish to Christianity,
St Patrick was honoured for his missionary work and theological
musings by becoming the patron saint of Ireland. The St Patrick
festival day has kept alive his legacy and become not only the annual
rallying point for people of Irish descent around the world but also
the national holiday celebrated in more countries around the world
than any other. Nearly 20 per cent of New Zealand's population is of
