Velvet trade eyes new growth

Deer velvet exporters are struggling to diversify away from a weak
Korean market. ANNA JAQUIERY finds them looking elsewhere in Asia and
at other medicinal uses.

Ten years ago, Dr Tong Ren Tang decided to tap into a key New
Zealand and Australian resource: velvet antler. What he would do with
the deer horns was based on ancestral knowledge.
"I had a family connection in China with traditional medicines,"
said Tong, who is managing director of Tong Ren Tang, a company with
offices in Beijing and Adelaide. Deer velvet is used in traditional
Chinese medicine to treat a range of ailments.
