Police credibility is in doubt after a case where a Chinese woman's identity was mistaken and she left the country before facing serious fraud charges, Asian community leaders say.

However, police say they treated seriously the case of Jindi Liu, who took advantage of a mistake by the police prosecutor and fled New Zealand before she could face an allegation of defrauding Asian students of their language course fees.

Chartered accountant and immigration consultant John Wong told The Press that the case showed police were ill-prepared to cope with Asian crime in the city.
