Efforts by some Maryland lawmakers to raise the state's maximum
speed limit on rural interstate highways from 55 to 65 miles per hour
have run into a roadblock that threatens to put off the issue for at
least another year.
Maryland is one of 10 states that have refused to raise the speed
limit on rural interstates since Congress gave states that option in
April 1987.
