Corcoran Cut From Painter's Will;Lowell Nesbitt's Mapplethorpe Protest

Escalating the backlash over the Corcoran Gallery of Art's
cancellation of the Robert Mapplethorpe exhibition, realist painter
Lowell Nesbitt amended his will Friday to cut out the institution
from his longtime bequest, which he estimates to be in excess of $1
million in art and real estate.
"The Corcoran acted with such incredible arrogance and
cowardice," Nesbitt said by phone from his SoHo loft, "I've decided
to withdraw. No museum of any caliber-much less a major one from
Washington, D.C.-would do a thing like that. They buckled under to
pressure that came from outside the art world. ...
