There are many different ways to stop a horse race.
James Hewitt tried to hold one up with a flag and a loaded gun
during World War 1.
Poor deluded Hewitt chose one of England's most famous races, the
Ascot Gold Cup, for his little experiment. The race drew a huge
crowd, as it featured England's most famous galloper, Tracery.
They gasped when, as the field thundered up the straight, Hewitt
stepped forward, waving his flag at Tracery and crying out "pull up,
or I'll shoot".
It was in an era before the popularity of Western movies, about
1916.
