Jet aircraft engines break open about 25 times a year worldwide,
according to federal records.
That means less than once every million flights, a rarity that
should give travelers confidence.
But three well-publicized incidents in the last month, plus a
fourth in St. Louis on Friday, have made some travelers uneasy.
Those incidents have also provoked discussion of ways to prevent
serious engine failures and to limit the damage they can cause to the
rest of an aircraft.
