THOMAS W. SIDWELL, the first headmaster of the Sidwell Friends School, knew in September 1883 that he had to defend coeducation when he welcomed 11 boys and girls to a new Quaker school at 1811 I St. NW, but he had no way of anticipating that a century later that issues surrounding coeducation would still be on the front burner in private education.
