FOR a man who swept to fame by crossing an ocean in a vessel experts scoffed at as being extremely sinkable, it's hard to believe Thor Heyerdahl was scared of water.

Twice he nearly drowned as a child in his home town of Larvik and it led to a long lasting loathing of the water. "If you had asked me as a 17-year-old whether I would go to sea on a raft, I would have absolutely denied the possibility," he once said.
