Hick the Lion-Hearted?I appreciate Susan Hale Whitmore's attempt
to educate me on the history of the Quakers and the origin of the
word "hick" {Free for All, June 3}, but her scholarship is somewhat
faulty.
The term "hick" predates the development of the Hicksite
Quakers. It is, in fact, a familiar form of the word "Richard" and
is dated by the Random House Dictionary (unabridged) from the period
1555-65. What I was objecting to was the use of the term
"hicksville," which the same dictionary labels as "slang."
The term Hicksite Quakers refers to the liberal branch of the
