Lawmakers Mimic the Mint;Coins Produced at Capitol `First-Strike' Ceremony

After 200 years of spending the public's money, Congress
yesterday got around to making some.
For the first time, the U.S. Mint moved four of its seven-ton
coin presses onto the Capitol grounds and, with flags waving and
satellite feeds beaming the moment back to their home districts,
scores of lawmakers stepped forward to stamp their own coins-gold for
senators, silver for representatives.
It was, said Rep. Lindy Boggs (D-La.), the first time that
Congress "literally" invoked its powers under Article 1, Section 8 of
the Constitution to "coin money."
