- Tarheel at birth: James K. Polk was born Nov. 2, 1795, in
Mecklenburg County, N.C,. and the family moved to the Tennessee
frontier when he was 10.
- Served: 1845-1849.
- A true dark horse! Polk's presidency was a surprise, even to
him. He went to the 1844 Democratic convention to support President
Martin Van Buren, figuring maybe to win the vice-presidential
nomination. Van Buren didn't get the required two-third majority of
delegates on the first vote, so balloting continued. Polk received a
single vote in the eighth round. The next round, he won the
nomination with 233 votes.
