Need a cure for the wintertime garden blues? Take a gesneriad or
two and you probably won't need to call the doctor in the morning.
Gesneriads aren't found on drugstore shelves but in garden centers
under the name of African violet, and a couple of African violets,
blooming profusely on a window sill, can ease a gardener's cravings
for garden blooms.
The most common of the more than 2,500 species of plants in the
gesneriaceae family, the African violet it isn't really a violet at
all. It is a native of Africa and its botanical name is Saintpaulias.
