Arafat Says PLO Charter `Superseded,' Refuses to Back Its Formal Abrogation
|
PLO Chairman Yasser Arafat today refused to endorse formal
abrogation of the 25-year-old Palestinian National Charter, insisting
that the controversial covenant, which Israel says calls for its
destruction, has been "superseded."
Arafat's French hosts made clear that his remarks constituted a
start toward reconciling recent moderate statements by the Palestine
Liberation Organization and the harshly worded 1964 charter.
President Francois Mitterrand asked for such clarification in his
90-minute meeting with Arafat yesterday.
