LOOK, DON'T TOUCH WATER BUGS

Last winter I finally got around to reading a book I'd purchased
in a gift shop at Yellowstone National Park a couple of summers
earlier. I'm not sure what tempted me to buy it, but its jacket said
it was a "twenty-fifth anniversary edition of a contemporary Walden."
So I
bought Annie Dillard's Pilgrim at Tinker Creek and promptly forgot
about it.
Once I rediscovered it, I was hooked by the eerie opening scene
along a tranquil stream. The author described a frog drifting with
the current, but looking somehow out of place. She noticed that its
