FAIRBORN - Leland Bell disregarded fashion, and fashion in turn disregarded him.

A painter of abstract works before abstraction was the vogue, who then became increasingly representational as abstraction dominated the art market, Bell didn't attend to trends.

Tradition, however, was another matter. The great masters, those painters concerned with the inner life of a painting - its architecture, its rhythms, its tensions and resolutions - these were his heroes and spiritual mentors.

But Bell, who died in 1991 at the age of 69, didn't give a hoot about "art history" per se, the relatively neat ...
