Tinseltown's take on the Pearly Gates
Oh, heavens!
Note the plural. Traditionally, most believers think of one
heaven. But in the world of secular popular culture, there are many
heavens, from the profound to the profane, although usually tending
more toward the latter.
Thus, in the recent Chris Rock comedy Down to Earth, heaven was a
swingin' nightclub, and the dead have to get past a bouncer at a
velvet rope instead of St. Peter at the Pearly Gates.
In 1997, Miller beer raised a ruckus among Christian pastors for a
TV commercial that showed angels in heaven dancing and drinking beer.
