JOHN JULIUS NORWICH's Byzantium: The Early Centuries is anything
but boring. The author, whose other books include massive histories
of Venice and medieval Sicily, seems to be deeply involved in the
events he is describing; the text is dotted with his
exclamations-"Alas," "Unfortunately," "Fortunately." He portrays in
detail the people he is dealing with-their appearances, their wars,
their triumphs and falls. For example, the Pope Vigilius (537-555),
