Dance; Harlem's Splashy Premieres

The highlights of the Dance Theatre of Harlem's second program at the Kennedy Center Opera House Thursday night were the back-to-back Washington premieres of the company's recent stagings of "Billy the Kid" and the "Polovetsian Dances" from "Prince Igor."

There are coincidental affinities here. Michel Fokine, who choreographed the "Polovetsian Dances" in 1909, was trying to convey the ferocious abandon of a wild Asian tribe in ancient Russia. Eugene Loring, who created "Billy" in 1938, strove to depict by means of the ballet one of the legendary tales of the old American West. Both ...
