Senate Refuses to Dismiss Hastings Charges

The Senate yesterday brushed aside U.S. District Court Judge Alcee L. Hastings' plea to dismiss all but one of the charges against him and named a 12-member panel to hear evidence in his impeachment case.

Hastings, the first black federal judge in Florida, pleaded his case personally before the Senate Wednesday, proclaiming his innocence on charges that he plotted to get a $150,000 bribe and then lied about it at his criminal trial, at which he was acquitted.
