AMATEUR NATURALIST From Troy to Knossos, great cities are built by industrious and social animals

Under two sumac trees by my house in Troy, a great metropolis has been under construction all summer. It has gotten bigger and bigger, one doorway after another appearing out of the dirt, and now spans more than 2 feet.

The city's residents scramble around hauling loads of dirt and scrutinizing every inch of land to find out what use can be made of it. There's no technology. It's as busy and strange a place as the ancient Greek city of Knossos must have been.
