Great Heights A new show in Portland reveals how photographer Margaret Bourke-White documented life

Margaret Bourke-White was a woman of heights. She walked along
tops of fences as a girl growing up in New York and New Jersey and,
as an adult, always asked for hotel rooms on the top floor. Her New
York City studio was a perch in the Chrysler Building, where she
looked out over Art Deco gargoyles and architecture that shared her
aspirations to reach directly upward.
In her work as a photographer, Bourke-White climbed to the tops of
skyscrapers, teetered on catwalks in factories and strapped herself
into planes to shoot images that would eventually secure her position
