FRANK SWINNERTON was a very modest man who has perhaps been taken at his word, for this is how he closed the final volume of his literary reminiscences (Figures in the Foreground): "For the rest I am content to be forgotten as soon I am dead. The fate has befallen better writers than myself."

This was probably not false modesty, for he began his literary career in the new competitive age of professional writers, among men and women of considerable talent and extraordinary energy. Swinnerton was born in Wood Green, Middlesex, England in 1884 ...
