Clay Warnick's article "Big Trouble With Great Books" {Style
Plus, Jan. 12} may be the most foolishly anti-intellectual article I
have ever read. No one should feel compelled to read every "great
book." If you don't enjoy a book, put it down and start another.
Like Warnick, I too have never been able to read more than a few
pages of Dante or Rabelais. But I have spent thousands of hours
reading and rereading Shakespeare, Luke, Plutarch, Po Chu-i, Tolstoy,
Thoreau, Orwell and Churchill. All of them are super writers, with
verbal diamonds sparkling on nearly every page.
