Normal sales tax receipts rise, shine with new stores

NORMAL - The spring openings of Meijer and Home Depot appear to have helped boost Normals state sales tax revenue more than 11 percent the first half of this year.

Sales tax revenue from the general merchandise and lumber categories jumped significantly compared with the same period last year. The Illinois Revenue Department recently released sales tax revenue figures for the second quarter of 2006. Municipalities receive 1 percent of the collected state sales tax three months after sales.

The increase wasnt a surprise to Normal Finance Director Ron Hill.
