PONTIAC - On July 22, 1978, the quiet of a hot, humid Saturday morning was broken at 9:45 a.m. when inmates from the Pontiac Correctional Center attacked correctional officers, killing three and seriously injuring three others.

Within minutes, a skirmish that started with several inmates rushing the officers exploded into a riot that eventually included 1,100 prisoners.
