Lee Kuan Yew, the only prime minister Singaporeans have ever
known, today formally turned over the leadership of this island
city-state to a younger successor and immediately heard a warning
that tough times lie ahead.
In an acceptance speech after a swearing-in ceremony at City
Hall, Lee's 49-year-old successor, Goh Chok Tong, warned that no
matter how the current Persian Gulf crisis is resolved, Singapore
stands to suffer.
