The nature of business is transitory. Whether a company makes it or not depends on numerous factors. But the key to longevity is finding a customer base and serving it well.

When Rio Rancho incorporated in 1981, only a handful of businesses called Rio Rancho home. It was a difficult market to tap because many of the community's residents were willing to drive to Albuquerque for goods and services.

It was a struggle for many of the city's early business, but here are three that have survived, and blossomed:
