'I get scared sometimes' Fifth-graders show neighborhood's true colors through photography Editor's note: Fifth-graders at La Mesa Elementary School have assembled an unusual photography show, portraying their neighborhood through the eyes of children. The school invited a Journal reporter and photographer to preview the show Tuesday.

An 11-year-old Albuquerque boy says he was afraid he would get killed when his family moved to La Mesa neighborhood two years ago.

A 10-year-old girl says police come to her La Mesa apartment complex almost every night, breaking up fights.

Armed with digital cameras, the girl and boy joined about 100 other fifth-graders from La Mesa Elementary to portray their neighborhood.

Their photos -- of trashy yards, boarded up houses, discarded condoms and pit bulls -- now line the walls of their school and nearby La Mesa Presbyterian Church.
