CHAMA -- The nonprofit corporation that runs the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railway has agreed to pay more than $270,000 to settle a lawsuit filed by a former employee who maintained she was forced out of her job because she is Hispanic.

Candie Martinez, a former mayor of Chama, filed the suit in July 2002, alleging she and other Hispanic employees of the Rio Grande Railway Preservation Corp. were "subjected to a racially hostile environment" by Anglo co-workers and supervisors.
