SIR Richard Arkwright (1732-92) is renowned for inventing the spinning frame and building the world's first water-powered cotton mill at Cromford, in 1771, making him one of the fathers of the industrial revolution.

The spinning frame was a massive leap forward from the spinning jenny. It was later renamed the water frame following the transition to water power.
